PISCINA MIRABILIS

Contemporary Art Museum Competition

Just like the channels between lake and cisterns, travelling miles through mountains and crossing fields to deliver water to different areas, the concept of this contemporary art museum is inspired from the Roman water channel system.

The two floating slabs are connected with each other through ramps, with stairs to guide you down to the bottom of the gallery space. Slab, ramp and stair, as if they were the water channels, crossing the space to bring water (here represent visitor) inside from above.

While the museum stay mostly open plan, those different levels allow visitor to view the art work from different perspective as well as to explore the beauty of existing structure. Open plan provides an immersive exhibition space to allow any type of contemporary art taking place. Yet those ramps and slabs crossing the higher level take a different discursive position exhorting the visitor to feel rather than solely look.
